5 Ways To Get Your Ex Back
(And Why The Advice Alone Was Never Enough)

A relationship writer on the belief underneath the scripts, the vision boards, and the five things that actually work — once something else has already shifted.

Most of the women who message me open with some version of "I know this is embarrassing." Then they admit they checked if he was Active now eleven times in the last hour. Screenshotted his story before he could delete it. Read the last conversation back so many times the words stopped meaning anything.

I did all of it too, three years ago. Typed something honest and devastating at 2am, deleted it, typed it again. Refreshed his profile for the fourth time in ten minutes hoping something, anything, had changed since the last time.

None of that makes you unstable. It makes you someone whose body thinks something is still on fire and hasn't gotten the signal to stand down. That's what this actually is, underneath the checking and the re-reading and the drafts you never send. Your nervous system doesn't know the relationship ended. It just knows it's not settled.

They all ask me the same question, just in a different order of words. Why hasn't he come back yet.

And I used to answer it the way every article like this one answers it. Here's what to text. Here's what not to text. Give it time. Focus on yourself. I believed it, mostly, because it's not wrong exactly. It's just incomplete in a way that took me three years, and a lot of women's heartbreak, to actually understand.

I want to tell you what I think is true. Not the tactical version. The one underneath it.

01

The Belief Everyone Starts With

Here's what you've probably already tried, or thought about trying, in some order.

✦ The old beliefs

None of it worked.

Not because you did it wrong. Because all five were aimed at the wrong target. You tried to change his mind, from the outside in, one message at a time.

Manifesting was always closer to the right idea. You already sensed the answer wasn't in the wording, that something had to shift on a level words alone can't reach. The vision board, the script, the mirror affirmation, they were reaching for that. What they were missing wasn't the intention. It was something specific enough to actually move.

I've watched two women send the identical text, word for word, to two different men, and get two completely different outcomes. One replied within the hour, warm, like he'd been waiting for an excuse. The other never replied at all.

Same words. Same tone. Same timing, near enough. If wording were the deciding factor, it wouldn't have mattered who the man was. It did. So if it's not the words, and it's not how much you change yourself, what is it.

I think it's belief. Not belief as in positive thinking. Belief as in what your body actually expects to happen, underneath whatever you're saying out loud, or writing on a vision board, or repeating in a mirror. And I think that belief responds to something a lot more specific than most manifesting content admits. Not a mood you talk yourself into. A connection that's either still live, or isn't.

02

What Not To Do

I know what the last few days have probably looked like, so let's not pretend otherwise. Before I get to what actually works, I want to clear away three things I see women doing constantly, in exactly this state, because they don't just fail to help, they keep you anchored to the wrong belief entirely.

Three mistakes almost everyone makes

Don't try to make him jealous. A man who's already pulling away doesn't compete for you when he sees someone else, he just confirms what he suspected — that you've moved on — and the connection between you gets a little quieter on his end too. Jealousy is you trying to force a feeling into him from the outside. It's the opposite of what actually pulls a man back.

Don't over-explain the breakup. Every message laying out the full timeline is you trying to argue your way into a different belief in his mind. He doesn't need the essay. He needs the space to arrive somewhere on his own, and that space only opens when you stop narrating it for him.

Don't love bomb him after silence. Go quiet for two weeks, then send four messages the second he replies, and you've shown him the silence was a performance, not a real shift. A man can feel the difference between a woman whose energy has actually settled and one who's just been holding her breath, waiting for permission to exhale at him.

I've watched these three mistakes undo more progress than the breakup itself ever did. But I've also watched women avoid every one of them, do everything technically right, script every sentence perfectly, and still hear nothing for months. That's the part conventional advice, and most manifesting advice, can't explain. It's the part I actually want to get to.

03

The Five Things That Actually Work

These aren't scripts. I'm not going to give you a text to copy and paste. These are five shifts, and I want to walk you through them honestly, because the first four are real and the fifth one is the part nobody puts in these articles.

1

Release your grip on the outcome

Every "no contact" article treats silence like something you deploy for 21 days and check like a lab result. It works when it's genuine, when you've actually released your grip on the outcome, not when you're performing peace while secretly refreshing his profile behind it. A woman who's actually let go pulls a man back in a way a woman who's pretending never quite manages, and I think that's because he can feel which belief she's actually holding, not just which words she's not sending.

2

Let your life become the message

Anything you tell him directly reads as trying, even when it's true. Anything he hears through a mutual friend, or simply senses without you posting it in his direction, reads as fact. There's a version of you he's no longer invited to see up close. More than one woman has told me her ex reached out the exact week she genuinely stopped needing him to, before he could have known anything had changed on the surface at all. Something reached him before the update did.

✦ "He reached out the week I stopped needing him to. He couldn't have known that. Something told him anyway."
3

Let him arrive at his own belief

Spend your energy proving you weren't at fault, and you keep both of you circling the same argument. Given enough quiet, most men rewrite the story in your favour without anyone asking them to. I used to think that was just human nature filling in gaps. Now I think it's closer to a pull, something that starts working on him before he's said a word to you about it.

4

Do the inner work that's actually yours to do

Not the performative kind, the new hobby you take up half for him to notice. The real kind. Sitting with why this one unraveled you the way it did. Grieving it honestly instead of managing it. Most manifesting advice tells you to work on yourself and stops there, as if healing alone is a magnet. It isn't, not by itself. But it does something important: it clears out the noise so that when something real does shift, you can actually feel it land instead of drowning it out with anxiety.

5

Let something outside you do what effort alone can't

This is the one I almost didn't include, because it's not something you do, it's something you have done. And I've watched it be the actual difference, more than any of the four things above it.

✦ The Bombshell

My friend had already tried everything on that list. Begged. Made him jealous. Texted, then chased, then tried to change herself into someone he'd want back. None of it worked.

Four months of silence from him. Nothing left to try, and nothing left to lose, so when her aunt mentioned something to her, something she'd laughed off years earlier, she finally listened.

She won't say much about what it actually was. Just that it took about ten minutes. That she felt ridiculous doing it. That she almost stopped halfway through, and did it anyway.

Day 2 He liked an old photo of hers, first contact in six weeks.
Day 4 He texted asking how she'd been.
Day 9 They're back together. Happier than she can remember them being.

That's the part that stopped me. She'd already done everything on that list, for months, and heard nothing. The only thing that actually moved him was this one thing....
